Description

Pelikan 400 Piston Filling Vintage Fountain Pen. Tortoiseshell Striated Barrel with Dark Brown Cap and 14C Gold Medium Nib. Made in Germany c.1957.

Dark brown screw on/off cap with medium gold filled lip band, with 'PELIKAN 400' and 'GERMANY' engraved around the circumference of lip band. Distinctive Pelikan-beak style gold filled clip. Clip secured by gold filled ‘top-hat’ derby. Brown jewel with Pelikan (two chicks) signet inlaid. Inside the cap there is a stainless steel ring, which is designed to prevent cap and barrel from parting should the threads become loose.

Brown tortoiseshell stripe striated translucent barrel with dark brown nib section. High-domed dark brown piston filling knob.  Screw piston filling mechanism with elastomer piston seal.

Nib and Feed

Original solid 14ct gold nib stamped within circle ‘Pelikan - 14C - 585 - (Pelikan 2 chick logo to inner circle) - M’. Nib and four lamellae ebonite feed are secured by ebonite collar which screws into the section. Nib tip is medium 'M', nib itself has moderate flex and writes a smooth line.

Service/Restoration

Pen has been fully disassembled and ultrasonically cleaned to remove traces of old ink. Filling mechanism removed and piston seal replaced, piston screw and seal lightly lubricated. Nib and feed correctly aligned, tip honed. Pen barrel and cap delicately hand polished. Write tested and finally flushed with clean water.

General Condition

Pen barrel and cap have no cracks, hairlines or dents. Age-related surface scratches are minimal. Gold plating to clip, clip ring and cap band is excellent. Cap to barrel screw is firm and positive. There are no personalisation. Barrel clarity is exceptionally good. Piston draws full capacity of ink. We would classify this pen as being in excellent overall condition. Pen is supplied in bespoke Hepworth Dixon card box.

Hepworth Comment

Much sort after Pelikan 400 NN model with rarer tortoiseshell stripe barrel. Pen shows very little sign of age-related wear. The clarity of translucent celluloid barrel is exceptional for a pen nearly 65 years old.
