Pelikan Souveran M405 Differential Piston Filling Fountain Pen. Black Cap with Blue Striated Barrel, Rhodium Filled trim with 14K Extra Fine Two Tone Nib. Germany c.2010.
The M405 series indicates rhodium-plated (white metal) trim rather than gold-plated trim (M400). This trim on the vivid blue stripe model fountain pen is the perfect complement for this cool color.
A true classic of the pen world, the Souveran is famed for its distinctive striped barrel reminiscent of a pinstriped suit. The attention to detail sets this pen apart with its iconic clip, logo detail on the cap and nib, and its striped barrel that requires many steps to manufacture. The Souveran was originally launched in 1950 as the 400 range, and renamed the Souveran in the late 1980s, quickly becoming Pelikan's flagship collection. The distinguished, iridescent blue pinstriped barrel is enhanced by gloss black accents and polished rhodium trim. The Pelikan M405, at 125 mm capped is a good sized fountain pen with broad profile.
The Pelikan M405 fountain pen is in the smaller category of Pelikan Souveran (Sovereign) range, and arguably it is the most popular model. The Pelikan Souveran range come in 5 sizes from small to large and a range of colours. The M405 features an 14 carat gold nib with rhodium decoration giving a two-tone finish.
Being a piston filling fountain pen, the M405 can only be filled with bottled ink. There is a small ink view window at the end of the barrel which indicates when the ink level inside the pen is low. The metal trim of the pen is rhodium plated. The striped barrel body of the M405 is made from celluloid acetate which is a cotton derivative and so each one is slightly different to each other, much like wood has different knots and patterns. The black stripes are actually transparent, so you can see how much ink is left inside the pen by holding it up to a light.
