Early version Montblanc 3-42.G piston filling vintage fountain pen in gloss black resin with gold plated trim. Germany 1953/54
Black resin screw-on cap. Domed resin cap top with ivory Montblanc 'Snow-cap' signet inset. Gold filled ring top pocket clip. Gold filled broad lip band. 'MONT (mountain) BLANC' is heat stamped to side of cap.
Black resin barrel and grip section. Pale blue translucent ink view window. Screw knob at rear of barrel which operates helical brass piston filling mechanism which has elastomer piston seal, Filling knob is heat impressed '3-42.G' and 'OB'.
Original 14C gold nib with plenty of iridium tipping. Stamped: 'MONT' 'BLANC' - 14C - MONTBLANC - 585' also stamped '342' unseen at base of nib. Nib has an oblique broad (left foot) writing tip which has modest flex. Good line width variation. Ebonite (BHR) ski-slope ink feeder.

Pen has been fully disassembled and ultrasonically cleaned. Nib and feed removed from section, nib polished and re-aligned with feeder. Gold plating on pocket clip and cap lip ring has been removed, polished and re- electroplated with 14K gold. Piston filling mechanism removed; cleaned, lubricated and adjusted for maximum piston travel. Piston vacuum pressure checked. Pen barrel and cap delicately hand polished. Reassembled, write tested and finally flushed with clean water.
Pen barrel and section are free from cracks, hairlines and noticeable surface scratches. Gold plating shows now signs of pitting or surface ware. There are no personalisation. The ink view window is exceptionally clear. Barrel to cap threads are firm and positive, as is the clip. Barrel and cap have a high gloss sheen. Piston filling system slides with ease and draws up maximum ink volume. Overall pen is ready to write and is in excellent condition. Pen is supplied in bespoke Hepworth Dixon card box.
This Early version of the Montblanc 3-42.G has it's model number heat stamped on piston filling knob, as opposed to being engraved on cap lip ring.
